Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise, holds the title of the world's oldest known living land animal at an astonishing 190 years old. Born around 1832, Jonathan has witnessed nearly two centuries of history, making him a living testament to longevity and resilience.

Residing on the island of St. Helena, a remote British territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, Jonathan's life has been remarkably well-documented. He was brought to St. Helena in 1882 as a gift to Sir William Grey-Wilson, who later became the governor of the island. Since then, Jonathan has become a beloved resident and an unofficial symbol of the island's rich history.

Despite his age, Jonathan remains active and enjoys a life of leisure in the gardens of the governor’s residence, Plantation House. His diet consists of fresh vegetables, including cabbage, carrots, and lettuce, which are carefully prepared by his caretakers to ensure he maintains his health and vitality. In recent years, Jonathan's caretakers have provided him with a special diet to address his declining eyesight and loss of sense of smell, ensuring he continues to thrive.

Jonathan's longevity has made him a local celebrity and a global icon. He has seen the world change drastically, from the advent of electricity and the telephone to the internet and space travel. His remarkable lifespan offers a unique perspective on the passage of time and the advancements humanity has made.

Celebrating Jonathan's 190th birthday is not just about honouring his age but also recognising the care and attention he has received from his dedicated caretakers on St. Helena. Their commitment to his well-being has played a crucial role in his longevity, highlighting the importance of responsible animal care and conservation.

Jonathan's story is a heartwarming reminder of the natural world's wonders and the enduring bonds between humans and animals. As we celebrate his incredible life, Jonathan continues to inspire and captivate people worldwide, proving that age is truly just a number.
